An Unusual Lot
Purcell chose a small city lot, only 50 feet wide by 150 feet long, on Lake Place, a diagonal, two-block street between Irving Avenue to the east and Lake of the Isles Boulevard to the west. He welcomed the challenge of designing an imaginative house specifically to fit the conditions of the lot. For example, he placed the house approximately thirty feet from the front property line so that its windows faced the neighbors' backyard gardens instead of their houses. Where the house was close to those on either side, unbroken walls preserved privacy. next page >
