The Artist's Portrait

Portraits and self-portraits by artists working in the early 20th century constitute one of the Kunin collection's many strengths. They are among its most personal and intimate images, riveting in their psychological intensity and immediacy. The portraits in this part of the exhibition represent a variety of approaches and styles, from Stuart Davis's expressionist portrait and Morris Kantor's powerful rayonist portrait of his mother, to the abstracted portraits by David Smith and Theodore Roszak, to the surreal or "magic realist" portraits of Paul Cadmus and George Tooker.
