Earthenware with painted spiral decorDimensions:14 5/8 x 15 3/4 in. (37.15 x 40.01 cm)Creation Place:Asia, ChinaCredit Line:The Ethel Morrison Van Derlip FundAccession Number:89.9 Location:G204 The material, shape, and design of this jar combine several distinguishing traits of Pan-shan type pottery. The bulging hemispherical upper half has been painted with purely abstract motifs. The decoration, painted in black, consists of a continuous swirling scroll centered on four roundels of crosshatched pattern. While the meaning of these large dramatic patterns is unknown, these evenly shaped storage jars are visually appealing especially when viewed from above.
