Vincent van Gogh did only one etching in his life: this portrait of his physician, Dr. Gachet. Van Gogh spent part of 1889 and 1890 at the Saint-Rémy asylum where he was under the care of Dr. Gachet, an amateur etcher who encouraged the artist to try the medium. Shorty after van Gogh completed this print, he left the asylum and committed suicide.
