Goltzius produced this engraving in the style of Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533), the greatest Netherlandish printmaker of the previous generation. It closely emulates both the manner and composition of van Leyden's own version of the theme (see inset). In this example, Goltzius chose a vertical format in contrast to van Leyden's horizontal composition, thereby reducing its narrative content.
