Title:Au ConcertArtist:Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
Art Institute of Chicago Date:1896Creation Place:Europe, FranceCredit Line:The John R. Van Derlip FundAccession Number:P.12,173 Watching the other members of the audience was often more entertaining than viewing the performance itself. In this small poster, Toulouse-Lautrec shows a typical Parisian couple attending the theater. As the artist's only commission from an American company, this poster was to advertise the lithographic ink manufacturers Ault and Wiborg of Cincinnati, Ohio. This is an example of how Toulouse-Lautrec's imagery often had nothing to do with the product he was advertising. The couple in the theater box tell us nothing about the product, but the beautiful young woman does serve to attract attention to the image.
