Matisse / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New YorkAccession Number:B.75.3.1 The Poems of Charles of Orléans is Matisse's last and most thoroughly integrated book. Its frontispiece pairs a striking image of the author, Charles d'Orléans, one of the foremost lyric poets of the 15th century in France, with a title page rendered in Matisse's own florid handwriting. Matisse created 54 full-page illustrations for this lavish book, but it is the colorful decorations and ornate texts that create the sumptuous feel of the book.
