Lintel Arch From a Vishnu Temple
Title:Lintel Arch From a Vishnu Temple
Artist:Artist Unknown
Date:12th century
Creation Place:Asia, India, Rajasthan, Rajasthan
Credit Line:Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Cleveland

Densely packed with carved images, this arch-shaped lintel originally capped a statue of Vishnu, the preserver. The arch was supported on each side by columns carved in a similar manner which acted to frame the central deity. The lintel displays seated images of Vishnu in three miniature temple forms surrounded by lesser gods and worshippers of the Hindu pantheon.
