head and torso of woman with hair in 2 buns over her ears, wearing a maroon wrap over green fabric printed with hearts, spades, diamonds and clubs, grey and orange kimono and orange and black obi; brown falling leaves

Autumn, 1927

Autumn shows a more assertively modern woman, or moga (abbreviated from modan gaaru, modern girl). Rather than the traditional shimada style of coiffure, she sports the modish rajio-maki (radio roll), recalling the headphones used by radio announcers. Her green jacket (haori), glimpsed beneath her maroon shawl, is patterned with Western playing card suits.
