Rustic furniture made from naturally-shaped timbers or rocks appealed greatly to the scholar official class with its strong Taoist values. Objects such as this, hand carved in imitation of nature, were admired for their evocative form and "free-style" carving. This unusually large huang-hua-li brush holder has a plug in the bottom to help alleviate cracking.
