This robe is a classic example of one style of Taoist robe which is cut like a poncho without sleeves. The garment type can be traced archeologically to the Sung dynasty (960-1279). The vestment, like several others in the collection, is precisely embroidered and exceptionally rich in couched metallic thread. The colored threads are all plied-cord silk couched to the ground fabric.
