An Indoor Campfire
Purcell, who had fond memories of the campfires at Island Lake, made the fireplace the second focus of the living room. The hearth is raised, and because the fireplace has no mantel, its decoration is integral. The roman brick's horizontal raked mortar joints hold iridescent glass that sparkled with the fire's light. Purcell procured what he called "the last piece of raindrop [sandstone] in Minnesota," notable for its lovely variegated purplish color, and placed it over the hearth. For the chimney wall above, George Elmslie used sawed-wood strips to form the basis of a wall decoration. next page >
