The Prow
For the prow, Purcell wanted a sculpture group, and approached Richard Bock, who frequently worked with Frank Lloyd Wright. Bock suggested the subject of Selma Lagerloff's recent book, The Wonderful Adventures of Nils. In 1915, nearly a year after Purcell commissioned it, the artist completed the patinated plaster sculpture of Nils Halgerson astride a goose. Purcell's original was irreparably damaged during his move to Portland, Oregon in 1919, so he had Bock make another identical Nils for his Portland home. A modern reproduction of "Nils on the Goose" currently sits on the prow, seemingly ready to lift off into the living room. next stop >
