Detailed Work

There is a great amount of detailed inpainting to be done in the lower right hand corner of the painting.

David Marquis inpaints the lily, which is a symbol of purity, and a book, which indicates St. Anthony of Padua's great scriptural learning.

October 15, 1999

Joan Gorman works on the skull at the knees of St. Francis of Assisi.

The skull is a reminder of man's mortality, and also an attribute associated with St. Francis.

Museum visitors get an overview of the restoration process and a look at the current inpainting being done.

Saturday brings many people to the exhibition gallery to hear Joan discuss the work that has been done and the work that remains to be done to the painting.

The conservators have completed some of the most difficult passages in the retouching process. Most of the damage to the painting was in the lower third of the picture and there has been much work dealing with these extensive areas of loss.
