H. 8 x Dia. 9 (at lid) in.

Initially a botanist and scholar, Christopher Dresser eventually supplied designs to more than fifty makers of metalwork, ceramics, glassware, furniture, textiles, and wallpaper. His early creations featured botanical forms in an elegant, minimalist style. After returning from Japan in 1877, he simplified his works even further, as seen in this tureen from 1880. He eliminated decorative ornament and used inexpensive materials, thereby producing innovative and affordable designs some forty years before they were advocated by the Bauhaus and other industrial designers.
