Late Victorian ceramists were more preoccupied with an eclectic range of revival styles (Gothicism, Japonisme, Islam, and their own Aesthetic Movement) than with European Art Nouveau. George Logan designed this ewer and basin around 1905 for Wedgwood & Company in England. Its decoration and coloration, a black transfer-printed Scottish rose accented with yellow on a pink ground, were key elements of the Glasgow School, which was made famous by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
