Shreve & Company, manufacturer (San Francisco) 1852–1967
Kettle on stand, 1911

H. 10 x Dia. 7 1/2 in.

In San Francisco, silver is still synonymous with Shreve & Company. Founded in 1852 as a jewelry shop, the company expanded into a manufacturing firm and became well-known for its Arts and Crafts designs. This teapot, based on Japanese porcelains, was first turned on a lathe and then hammered by hand, a technique Shreve reserved for its finest pieces. The finely textured surface enhances the object’s simple, pristine form.
