Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution had a tremendous impact on turn-of-the-century designers, rekindling a new appreciation in them for plant and animal forms. Christopher Dresser, a renowned botanist, writer, and designer, created this vessel, which was inspired by the humble sea urchin and the double-spouted forms of pre-Columbian pottery. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Dresser readily accepted mechanized production while stressing the importance of good design and quality craftsmanship.
