Walter Dorwin Teague
American, 1883 - 1960
Sparton Corporation, manufacturer (Jackson, Michigan)
Sparton radio, 1936

H. 9 x W. 18 x D. 8 in.

In this radio, Walter Teague combined sight and sound to herald the unlimited promises of the future. The work’s streamlined form—achieved through horizontal lines, rounded corners, sleek surfaces, and bold typography—suggests supersonic flight, as if it were hurtling through space. As with so many products designed by Teague and others, the streamlining was more symbolic than functional, and intended to inspire confidence in the machine age and advanced technology.
