LECTURE Design for Living: Gustav Stickley and The Craftsman Magazine Saturday, May 18, 20132 – 3 p.m. Friends Community Room Lecturer: Debra Hegstrom, PhD
Gustav Stickley disseminated ideas about domesticity and the role of the American homemaker through his magazine, The Craftsman (published 1901-1916). The influence of The Craftsman continues today in magazines like Dwell, Style 1900, Martha Stewart Living, and others. Participants will look within its pages to find a wide range of articles that discuss housing design, interior furnishings and accessories, and philosophies of living. Hegstrom will also explore Stickley's attitudes toward proper nutrition through a brief look at his restaurant, which was stocked by fresh, locally sourced foods from Craftsman Farms, his family residence.
Hegstrom is senior educator at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, where she oversees the docent training and continuing education programs. She has taught classes on a variety of topics for the MIA, the University of Minnesota Compleat Scholar Program, and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
$10; $5 for MIA members; free for members of the Library Affinity Group. To reserve tickets, call (612) 870-6323 or reserve tickets online »
