LECTURE Saturday, February 23, 201311 a.m. – Noon Pillsbury Auditorium Lecturer: Gary Radke
Most Italian Renaissance art presents an overly idealized picture of a tumultuous time that was actually beset by constant warfare, plagues, and natural disasters. This lecture covers the crucial role the visual arts played in helping people cope with a frightening world. Learn how the Florence Flood of 1966, one of the greatest natural disasters to have hit the city, continues to inspire and frustrate restorers today.
Radke is Dean's Professor of the Humanities at Syracuse University. He also organizes exhibitions of Italian Renaissance art for the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. A fellow of the American Academy in Rome, Radke has received fellowship support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Samuel H. Kress Foundation, ACLS, and the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, among others. He has also been recognized as Meredith Professor for Teaching Excellence and won the William Wasserstrom Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching at Syracuse University. He is co-author with John T. Paoletti of a widely distributed college textbook, Art in Renaissance Italy.

Great art "feels" right. It has an internal balance and equilibrium created by the relationships of its forms, spaces, and visual elements. Balance helps viewers engage in a work through a process intended and controlled by the artist. Study two types of visual balance and practice them by drawing from works in the MIA collection.

IN THE STUDIO Get inspired through song, movement, and imaginative play. Make artworks that use line, shape, and color and that emphasize personal meaning over imitation. Develop independent problem-solving skills as you make your own artistic choices.

IN THE GALLERIES Examine objects to identify elements, such as line, shape, and texture, and warm and cool colors. Identify and explain your favorite and least favorite parts of an artwork. Interpret artistic themes and scenes through the lens of personal experience.
IN THE STUDIO Use real-life objects, your lives, and your imagination as a creative springboard. Create artworks that tell your individual story. Practice drawing techniques to record your observations.

IN THE STUDIO Plan like an artist by using preparatory sketches and scale models. Gain confidence in representational drawing skills through close observations and use of detail. Practice color mixing, compositional choice, proportion, showing depth, and more. Find ways to communicate meaning through art.
