SPECIAL EVENT Thursday, October 11, 20126 – 7 p.m. Information Desk Curators of the MIA and Brandon Boat
Curators at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts will take you a tour unlike any other offered at the museum. You will travel around the galleries hearing unbelievable stories about different works of art in the collection. If some sound too fantastic to be true, that's because they are. We might be lying to you. Each stop will feature several true stories and one lie. It is up to you to decide which tale is true and which curator is lying to your face. Did we mention that you'll be keeping score? The person with the biggest BS detector will win a prize, while the more gullible visitors will walk away with only stories. The tour is free, so bring a friend.

LECTURE Arnold Newman Lecture: Stan Douglas Thursday, October 11, 20127 – 8 p.m. Pillsbury Auditorium Stan Douglas, winner of the prestigious Infinity Award for Art by the International Center for Photography in 2012, is a visual artist who lives and works in Vancouver and Los Angeles. He was a professor at Universitat der Kunste Berlin and since 2009 has been a member of the core faculty in the Grad Art Department of Art, Center College of Design in Pasadena.
Douglas has created films, photographs, and installations that reexamine particular locations or past events. His works often take their points of departure in local settings, from which broader issues can be identified. Making frequent use of new as well as outdated technologies, Douglas appropriates existing Hollywood genres and borrows from classic literary works to create ready-made contextual frameworks for his complex, thoroughly researched projects.
His work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at prominent institutions worldwide.
Major international museum collections hold works by the artist, including Walker Art Center.

LECTURE Friends Lecture: Art Without Objects (or, what to do when Donald Judd becomes Damien Hirst) Thursday, October 11, 201211 a.m. – Noon Pillsbury Auditorium Lecturer: Blake Gopnik
Today's art scene offers such a dizzying selection that you can't tell your Judds from your Hirsts. Gopnik proposes that the best way to cope with this overdose of product may be to realize that great art has been less material than we imagine; the lasting ideas triggered by objects matter more than the objects themselves.
Gopnik was the chief art critic of The Washington Post from 2001 to 2011, and now writes about art and design for Newsweek and The DailyBeast.
