LECTURE Saturday, September 22, 20122 – 3 p.m. Pillsbury Auditorium Lecturer: Jun Kaneko
Jun Kaneko is Northern Clay Center's 25th Regis Master, a series now in its 16th year, which honors senior ceramic artists who have made major contributions to 20th- and 21st-century ceramics.
Kaneko will discuss the development of his ceramic work, as well as his influences and life. A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and the Claremont Graduate School in California, Kaneko studied with Paul Soldner and Peter Voulkos during the Contemporary Ceramics Movement.
He has exhibited internationally and is a two-time recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship.
Kaneko has maintained a studio in Omaha, Nebraska, since 1986, where he continues to produce both intimate and large-scale ceramic and bronze sculptures, tiles, drawings and paintings, glass and textiles. His repertoire of artistic contributions also includes a variety of public art works, as well as three operatic productions, one of which is Mozart's The Magic Flute, to premier for the San Francisco Opera later this fall.
In the clay world, Kaneko is most noted for his very large-scale platters, wall tiles, monolithic heads, and dangos, (organic forms at least seven feet tall). Co-presented with the Northern Clay Center.
