LECTURE Fantasy & Reality: An Examination of Dress & Jewelry in Rembrandt in America Thursday, August 23, 20127 – 8 p.m. Pillsbury Auditorium Presenter: Ann Tozer
We all know that old adage, "Clothes make the man." But what can we make of the clothes and accessories in Rembrandt's portraits? According to presenter Ann Tozer, quite a lot. Rembrandt's masterful depiction of lush fabrics, jewels, and lace is not only beautiful, but also rich in meaning.
Tozer will draw from her background as a researcher of jewelry and fashion history to illuminate the context of the objects that play such an important role in understanding Rembrandt's paintings.
Tozer holds an MA in the history of dress from the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, and was on the curatorial team for the William and Judith Bollinger Jewellery Gallery at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
$15; $10 for MIA members
