YOUTH PROGRAM Summer Full-Day Studio: Art Day Camp: Pre-Raphaelite Vision (sec. S16, ages 9 to 11) Monday through Friday, July 13 through 1710 a.m. – 4 p.m. Classrooms 112/113 Instructor: Melanie Casiday. Section limited to 20.
Explore the artistic style introduced by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of Victorian-era artists whose work is on view in the exhibition “Sin & Salvation: William Holman Hunt and the Pre-Raphaelite Vision.” Rejecting the rigid dogma of the Royal Academy, this group sought to capture the originality and freshness of Italian painting before Raphael (1480–1520)—thus its name. Fueled by a passion for the natural world, the Pre-Raphaelites studied geology and natural history to inform the way they painted. Similarly, we’ll experiment with new techniques while exercising our ability to carefully observe objects on loan from the Bell Museum of Natural History. You’ll create pencil renderings on chalk-toned paper, read intriguing excerpts about nature, and develop intense compositions that detail objects as though they were seen through a microscope.
You'll practice fundamental techniques of drawing and painting while learning about art history through visits to the galleries. Through demonstrations, discussion, and hands-on practice, you'll build technical skills by solving problems of composition and value.
Bring a bag lunch, beverage, and snacks.
Tuition for the week-long section is $270; $180 for MIA members.
To register, call (612) 870-3131, or to download class brochure and registration form, go to the artsmia.org home page, and scroll down to "Calendar and Events" and click on "Youth and Family Programs."
