FILM Thursday, July 12, 20127 – 8:30 p.m. Pillsbury Auditorium The special quality of Dutch light was discovered and celebrated in art. Without it, the work of artists such as Johannes Vermeer and Jan van Goyen would not have been the same.
But the German artist Joseph Beuys suggested that The Netherlands lost its extraordinary radiance after the reclamation of large parts of the Zuyder Zee, a shallow bay of the North Sea in the northwest of the Netherlands, in the mid-1950s.
Dutch Light centers largely on Beuys's hypothesis, and breaks new ground by examining this celebrated but elusive phenomenon. Artists, art historians, and scientists answer some of the questions raised by Beuys's hypothesis and the myth of Dutch light.
Dutch Light was filmed over a 12-month period on location in The Netherlands, Provence, and the Painted Desert in Arizona. James Turrell and Jan Andriesse, the Dutch artists Jan Dibbets and Robert Zandvliet, and art historians Ernst van de Wetering and Svetlana Alpers share their personal and often contradictory views on the subject of Dutch light.
Dutch Light is about looking. About taking the time to observe things closely. It draws the viewer into a hypnotic melange of ideas, hypotheses, colors, images and landscapes. And, of course, light.
A film by Pieter-Rim de Kroon and Maarten de Kroon, 2003, 91 mins., On DVD. In Dutch and English.
