The Social Life of Weaving Among Contemporary Navajo

Saturday, June 16, 2012
2 – 3 p.m.

Wells Fargo Community Room

Lecturer: Jill Ahlberg Yohe, PhD

In an era that has seen a diminishing number of full-time Navajo (Diné) weavers and fewer students of the art, woven objects and the practice of weaving remain a powerful tribal presence. Cultural educators, community members, and weavers make weaving a meaningful practice and art form in a variety of social contexts.

In this lecture, Jill Ahlberg Yohe illustrates how a range of Navajo people use textiles and weaving skills in the socialization of children, in the moral formation of young women, and as a means to present Navajo culture for Native and non-Native audiences. Weaving-related knowledge, skills, and objects are circulated by community members in many social spheres including the home, classrooms, workshops, cultural ceremonies, and even Miss Navajo pageants.

Yohe's research, based on four years of extensive fieldwork, centers on local concepts and practices associated with Navajo weaving and contributes to the study of aesthetics, exchange, and materiality.

Yohe is the Mellon Fellow of Native American Art at the Saint Louis Art Museum, where she is currently curating art for two new galleries. She received her PhD from the University of New Mexico.

$15; $10 for MIA members; free for members of the Native American Art Affinity Group.
