LECTURE Rembrandt's Faces: Passions of the Mind, Heart, and Soul Thursday, June 7, 20121:30 – 3 p.m. Pillsbury Auditorium Presenter: Shelley Perlove
Get insight into Rembrandt's portrayals of faces, both human and divine, and explore how they relate to the artist's abiding ambition to convey the "greatest and most natural emotion" in art. Rembrandt's use of a Jewish model to depict the face of Jesus, imbued with empathy, gentleness, and grace, countered the canonical image of Christ in European art.
Shelly Perlove, PhD, is a professor of art history at University of Michigan-Dearborn. She co-published Rembrandt's Faith: Church and Temple in the Dutch Golden Age, which won the Roland H. Bainton Prize from the Sixteenth Century Society.
Sponsored by Sylvia Druy Endowment for Museum Guide Education.
Admission: $15; $10 for MIA members, free for museum guides. To register, call (612) 870-6323 or register online » |
