Olowe of Ise: A Yoruba Sculptor to Kings

Presenter: Rosyln A. Walker, PhD

Olowe of Ise (c. 1875-1938), is recognized as the most innovative traditional artist of 20th-century Africa. While honoring the Yoruba traditional style, Olowe of Ise created a carving style that distinguished him from his peers and brought him to the attention of Yoruba kings and patrons beyond his hometown.

Walker will examine the works and life of Olowe and discuss recent developments in her ongoing research. She is the Margaret McDermott Curator of African Art, Dallas Museum of Art.
