Get a rare glimpse at treasured artworks held by dozens of Minnesota's private collectors. Remarkable for its breadth and caliber, this insightful exhibition showcases more than 140 masterworks by American artists working from 1800 to 1920, and sheds new light on the personal passions of Minnesota collectors.
SPECIAL EVENT Third Thursday: The Big Draw Thursday, February 19, 20096 – 9 p.m. museum-wide Sketchy characters and devout doodlers, unite tonight! Check out dazzling drawings collected by Yvonne and U Prof. Gabriel Weisberg. Get lively to music by The Deaths. And catch The Gleaners and I, a 2001 award-winning French documentary about people who scour fields for the odd potato or turnip—and whose labors have inspired a great many pictures.
• See the exhibitions “Expanding the Boundaries: Selected Drawings from the Yvonne and Gabriel P. Weisberg Collection” in Cargill Gallery and “Expanded Drawing” in the Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program Gallery. • Film: The Gleaners and I, 7 p.m., in Pillsbury Auditorium. Agnès Varda’s film was voted the best documentary of 2001 by the National Society of Film Critics, Agnès Varda's universally acclaimed 'wandering-road documentary' focuses her ever-seeking eye on gleaners: those who scour already-reaped fields for the odd potato or turnip. Her investigation leads us from forgotten corners of the French countryside to off-hours at the green markets of Paris.(Directed by Agnès Varda, 2001, 82 min., color, French with English subtitles, originally captured on digital media with playback on Beta.) • Music: local favorites The Deaths, at 6:30 p.m., in ArtsBreak Café, cash bar. • Curator-led tour: Lisa Michaux will lead a tour of the exhibition at 7:30 p.m., in Cargill Gallery. • ASK ME!
