Before "Top Gun" there was "Wings," the 1927 silent film about World War I fighter pilots, which received the first-ever Oscar for best picture. Charles Rogers and Richard Arlen play two men from the same small town, romantic rivals vying for the attention of the beautiful Sylvia (Jobyna Ralston) and ignoring Mary (Clara Bow), the pretty "girl next door." Both men enlist to fight in the war, and grow from romantic rivals into fast friends during the rigorous training period before flying against the Germans in Europe. Meanwhile, Mary finds her own way to Europe as an ambulance driver. The fog of war pervades the plot as missed romantic opportunities, misunderstandings, and a tragedy beset our main characters.

This class will explore the complementary, split complementary and triadic color schemes. Students will experiment with these approaches, working from the permanent collection. Slide presentations will examine significant works from art history that use these schemes effectively.

IN THE STUDIO Get inspired through song, movement, and imaginative play. Make artworks that use line, shape, and color and that emphasize personal meaning over imitation. Develop independent problem-solving skills as you make your own artistic choices.

IN THE GALLERIES Examine objects to identify elements, such as line, shape, and texture, and warm and cool colors. Identify and explain your favorite and least favorite parts of an artwork. Interpret artistic themes and scenes through the lens of personal experience.
IN THE STUDIO Use real-life objects, your lives, and your imagination as a creative springboard. Create artworks that tell your individual story. Practice drawing techniques to record your observations.

IN THE STUDIO Plan like an artist by using preparatory sketches and scale models. Gain confidence in representational drawing skills through close observations and use of detail. Practice color mixing, compositional choice, proportion, showing depth, and more. Find ways to communicate meaning through art.

Explore the art of the indigenous peoples of North, Central, and South America, from ancient times to the present. |
