Two years after opening its doors in 1915, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts purchased its first Asian object—a magnificent black marble statue of a bejeweled Kuan-yin from 6th-century China. Since then, the collection has grown to more than 9,500 objects representing seventeen Asian cultures.
The Asian Art Curatorial Council was founded in 1984. Members of the council enjoy lectures, seminars, private tours of special exhibitions, and travel opportunities that encompass the full range of Asian history and artistic expression. Membership dues and donations help support these programs and the Asian Art Department's acquisition of significant works of art.
