Cupid and Psyche: Neoclassical Visions of Love

Saturday, February 11, 2006—Sunday, August 20, 2006
Gallery 306
Free Exhibition

Baron François Gérard's famous painting, Cupid and Psyche, is on temporary loan to The Minneapolis Institute of Arts from the Musée du Louvre during the spring and summer of 2006. A small dossier exhibition, it features relevant works from the Institute's permanent collection, including Prud'hon's Union of Love and Friendship, Pajou's bronze Psyche Abandoned, and supplementary works on paper. Focusing primarily on Cupid and Psyche, the exhibition explores the context in which these works were created, including the neoclassical movement in France, Jacques Louis David and his pupils, the artist's penchant for mythological subjects and the popularity of the Cupid and Psyche theme.
