Bruno Paul and Peter Behrens were among the first to embrace collaborations between designers and industry. This samovar is a courageous declaration of modernism, anticipating the spirit and ideal of the Bauhaus movement (1919-33) by some fifteen years. Its clean, uncluttered surface, mechanistic detailing (particularly the neck), and implied disdain of decoration result in a work of exceptional strength and presence, an early essay in functionalism.
