Today, German Bauhaus design is best known for its simplicity of form, clean lines, inexpensive materials and, above all, its functionalism. Dell's table lamp is a fine example of the Bauhaus aesthetic at its peak of production. He and Lázló Moholy-Nagy (1895-1946) forged a new design vocabulary for which Bauhaus metalwork is greatly admired. Totally devoid of ornamentation, its mechanized appearance has become the hallmark of mass-produced industrial design to this day.
