This cantilevered piano lamp serves as a textbook example of pure abstraction, comprised of six basic geometric elements. Like many of his contemporaries, Oud enjoyed designing furnishings for his interiors. Composed into a fully functional form, it has become widely recognized as one of Oud's most important contributions to the de Stijl aesthetic. Originally designed as a wedding gift in bronzed copper for an artist friend, later versions, such as this example, were produced in nickel-plated brass.
