Greene Street captures Delaney's emerging modernist style in 1940.
Instead of rendering a realistic image of his urban surroundings, the artist used key elements
(fire escapes, tenements, fire hydrants, and manhole covers) to express, in an emblematic
manner, the essence and spirit of this street in Greenwich Village. His use of vibrant
complementary colors, thrusting diagonals, and jagged outlines infuses the composition with
a dynamism and energy that is unmistakable. Delaney knew this locale quite intimately, as he
lived at Number 181 Greene Street, above the Remsen Trucking Company, for sixteen years.
