Events for Friday, April 30, 2010
Join us for Art in Bloom 2010, a free, four-day festival that celebrates timeless art and fresh flowers. Presented by the Friends of the Institute, this event showcases the talents of more than 150 floral artists, whose designs interpret works of art in the museum’s collection. In addition, professional florists provide lavish arrangements and spectacular displays outside of the galleries. Lectures, luncheons, and other special events complement this favorite rite of spring at the MIA.
Free and open to the public; reservations required for special events.
Watch as Chieko Mihori, Sogetsu Riji, director of Sogetsu Ikebana North America (East Coast), and V.P. of Cultural Affairs at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, completes several compositions using this sculptural floral-arranging style right before your eyes. Sogetsu Ikebana is a three-dimensional artistic expression that strives for a modern, fresh style that evolves along with society. Although based on Japanese tradition, Sogetsu is becoming recognized throughout the world as a sculptural form of art. It promotes an Ikebana without limits as to the plant materials used and when and where it is displayed. Sponsored by Lakewood Cemetery.
